All good advice. I would keep the rapport as pro as possible and avoid bringing up personal topics. However, to establish good rapport with foreign students of AE, a good ice-breaker sometimes could be to show that you are aware of a current topic of their home country, as is possible. They probably would be more confident to express themselves and provide “data”.
