Would it be a good idea to give the client a call once in a while to check on practice sessions?
Not sure what you mean… Do you mean in between classes? You can do whatever fits for you. I personally have very clear lines drawn between class and not class. If you call the student in between classes to talk about homework, this may be taken as an invitation to call you/email you/text you with questions in between classes on a more regular basis. I hate telling people no, so I find it easier to set clear boundaries ahead of time so there is no awkwardness. Chatting in between sessions might work for you if you only have a couple students, but will be much harder to manage when you have sessions all day. For those who really want check-ins, I would create a custom program add-on for this (paid). That being said, I will answer questions between classes if students ask. Also, I always let them know that they should reach out immediately if there is anything that prevents them from being able to do their homework (technical problem, question about what something on the HW means, etc.).
