C’est “fun”..The French can say this word with the correct “u” sound /ʌ/.
I can understand how they would have a problem and fall back on the /ʊ/. The closet sound for them is produced with pursed lips (less rounded).
These French sounds are made in the front of the mouth with tight lips. So I can see that they attempt to make sound differences by repositioning their lips more than their tongue.
