In my market, the vast majority of competitors offer a free evaluation for language training programs. I’m more comfortable with an initial “Case History” step, free of charge prior to the phone consultation that the client can send back before the date. The advantage is that I’d be more prepared to have a more efficient phone consultation with more focus on his/her speaking (productive) skills. The written responses also shed light on the basic language knowledge. These combined productive skills feedback are great prep. I’d be able to recommend the best program relative to the client’s objectives.
You are welcome to adapt the consultation process to suit your needs. I like NOT having a case history form in advance as it makes the conversation seem much more natural and organic (vs. knowing many of their answers in advance). You can have students submit an audio sample in advance– this could help you feel more comfortable at first as you would then have time to get your thoughts together before making a recommendation over the phone. As you gain experience, it will become easier to make recommendations on the spot. I prefer doing consultations right away without extra steps– helps keep the momentum going while they are excited and ready to get going. Some speakers may get nervous about creating an audio recording and put off sending it in. On the other hand, you might have some people who like the idea of submitting their audio as a first step rather than calling in. Pros and cons to both strategies, so whatever works best for you and your business!
